West & Reid project featured in Ideal Home Magazine

We were proud to have one of our favourite projects of the year featured in July 2019’s edition of Ideal Home Magazine.

Designed in collaboration with homeowners Matt Williams and Sarah Wood, this 17m x 8m open-plan living space combined kitchen, dining and living room.

The initial renovation was undertaken with Charles Tashima Architecture and Paul + O Architects, who opened the space up and added a small extension before we got involved, through a friend's recommendation, to help create a simple, contemporary kitchen.

The brief was to design a kitchen that looked like a piece of furniture, rather than a kitchen. So, to that end, we hid all the appliances behind spray painted off-white doors, with the ovens, which couldn't go behind doors, hidden on the back of the island. We included solid oak handles to bring a some natural materials into the kitchen.

Placing the kitchen at the centre of the large living space made the long kitchen island a possibility – a perfect space for entertaining. We suggested placing the hob on the island so that when Sarah and Matt were cooking for guests and family they didn't have their back to the room, and the flush set induction hob means that when it’s not being used to cook on, it can be used as prep space.

We also built the bespoke shelving unit in the seating area, which we designed to blend in seamlessly with the kitchen, and configured it to make the most out of the available space, but with an interesting shelf configuration. “Having doors on some compartments means we can hide bits and bobs” said Sarah.

The drinks cabinet concealed behind the largest panel was one of our favourite hidden elements; safely away from the kids but easy to access when entertaining.
